BRI rail link traffic up 117% … and it’s only the beginning

KUALA LUMPUR (March 2018): The Belt Road Initiative (BRI) has started showing the business and trade potential boost that can be expected.

And, it is only the beginning.

The China Railway Express delivered a total of 3,673 block trains to European nations last year, up 116% compared to the previous year.

For all the relentless demonising of BRI by the US and its allies, the BRI rail express is set to give 36 cities in 13 European countries the much needed economic boost.

Also, within two years, the travel time of the express train has been cut from 20 days to 12, while operational costs have shrunk by 40%!

In 2017, the number of freight trains running between China and Europe, under the so-called 'China Railway Express', increased by 116 percent compared to the previous year. China News Service
China announced on Monday that the country has seen a record high number of cargo trains running to and from Europe.

Yan Pengcheng, spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and director of the NRDC's policy study office, said that a total of 3,673 block trains were sent to European nations in 2017, an increase of 116 percent compared to the previous year, The Paper reports.

A block train, also known as a unit train, is a train in which all wagons are shipped to the same destination from the same origin, without being split up or stored en route.

"The China-Europe freight trains have been on a fast development track since they were uni-branded under the 'China Railway Express' banner in 2016. They have not only promoted economic and trade ties among the nations along their transport routes, but further opened up China's economy," Yan stated.

As part of the Belt and Road initiative, the Beijing-proposed infrastructure and trade mega-project, the China Railway Express can currently reach out to 36 cities in 13 European countries, including Hamburg, Moscow and London. In less than two years, their travel time has been cut from 20 days to 12, while operational costs have decreased by 40 percent.

The scope of the goods delivered has also been extended to include clothing, automobiles, grains, wines, coffee beans and wood, as well as electronic goods such as computers and mobile phones.
