NEW DELHI: The Centre accused the Supreme Court of encroaching into the legislative domain while diluting the stringent arrest provision of the SC/ST ( Prevention of Atrocities) Act + and appealed on Thursday for its restoration. The written submission by attorney general K K Venugopal on behalf of the Centre reflected the executive’s seething anger rather than a dispassionate analysis of the March 20 judgment, which introduced anticipatory bail as well as mandated police officers to first inquire into the veracity of a complaint before registering an FIR and arresting an accused. “This case dealing with an issue of a very sensitive nature has caused a lot of commotion in the country and is also creating anger, unease and a sense of disharmony,” the AG said … for more, go to https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/supreme-courts-dilution-of-sc/st-act-caused-great-damage-govt/articleshow/63738903.cms

India - the next Syria? Wow! A bit far fetched, isn’t it?

KUALA LUMPUR (April 2018): US ally India, which has taken a hostile stand towards China’s global economic and military influence and expansion, appears to be bogged down by serious domestic woes.

Its rising unemployment rate, political violence and domestic caste disputes are certainly not helping Indian nationals one wee bit.

As India joins the US to demonise China and its multi-trillion-dollar Belt Road Initiative (BRI) that is aimed at promoting trans border trade in Asia, Europe and Scandinavia, can India continue to ignore its peoples’ woes and needs?

Below are two news reports, one by hindustantimes titled “India will soon become like Syria, says Prakash Ambedkar on Dalit protests”.

Though I Love Malaysia-China Silk Road finds the report a wee bit far fetched, the hindustantimes still found it publishable.

We reproduce the two news reports FYI (For Your Information):

Pune President of the Bharip Bahujan Maha Sangh (BBMS) Prakash Ambedkar has criticised the BJP-led central government and the Supreme Court on violence in various states, during a press conference held in Pune on Monday.

“BJP government is not taking any action against religious violence in India.Government cannot differentiate on the grounds of caste, thus, soon India will become Syria ," he said.

Ambedkar added,"Central government and the Supreme Court are responsible for today’s violence. The government is responsible for such an unsafe atmosphere for Dalits in country which has forced people to agitate on streets." Ambedkar alleged that, government failed to take appropriate steps to avoid the violence.

The Supreme Court, on March 20, diluted provisions of the Atrocities Act to protect honest public servants blackmailed with false cases under the act. This was criticised by Dalits community and leaders.

"Over the last few days a post calling for a bandh went viral on social media. No one knows who was behind that, but this bandh is only restricted to the northern states of India. If the government does not look seriously at this issue, it will have to pay for it," Ambedkar said.

He also criticised Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat for his statement on the RSS not believe in excluding anyone from the process of nation building. He said, "He is liar,I known him very well.Their organisation is based on divide and rule policy." - hindustantimes

Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh leader Prakash Ambedkar on Monday, 2 April, said the Supreme Court and the Centre were responsible for the violence in various states during the nationwide bandh called by Dalit outfits.

At least nine persons were killed and many injured in violence as Dalit protesters blocked trains, clashed with police and set fire to vehicles across several states during the bandh against the dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Government and the Supreme Court are responsible for this violence. The government is creating an unsafe atmosphere for Dalit communities while the apex court’s recent order diluting the SC/ST Atrocities Act has forced the community to take to the streets. - Prakash Ambedkar

He said the government failed to act in time to avoid the spiral into violence.

"I do not know who gave the call for the bandh. It was given on social media a few days back, however, the government did not take this call seriously," said the Dalit leader who had spearheaded protests in Maharashtra in the wake of the caste clashes that broke out on 1 January in Koregaon Bhima in Pune district.

Nine people were killed in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan as protests over the SC/ST Atrocities Act turned violent. Curfew was imposed in at least three towns in Madhya Pradesh, including Morena, Bhind and Gwalior. MP, UP, and Punjab have requested aid from Central forces. Dalit protesters blocked trains, clashed with police and set fire to vehicles in violent protests across seven states against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, leaving at least 9 people dead and many injured today, officials said.
Curfew was imposed in several places and the army was called out in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. The army and paramilitary forces were also put on standby in Punjab for more, go to https://www.thequint.com/news/india/atleast-9-people-died-in-the-bharat-bandh-protest

The apex court, on 20 March, diluted certain provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in a bid to protect “honest” public servants discharging bona fide duties from being blackmailed with false cases under the Act.

The verdict is being widely criticised by Dalits and the Opposition, who claim that the dilution of the Act will lead to more discrimination and crimes against the backward community.

Ambedkar also attacked the Centre over recent incidents of communal violence in West Bengal and Bihar.

The Ram Navami procession has been an annual affair, but its spread to small towns, more so in Bihar and West Bengal, has been a recent phenomenon. The Chaiti Durga idol immersion also (must confess that it is some sort of a rarity still) presumably happens every year. Why did the two auspicious events in the Hindu calendar create so much animosity among religious communities this year? Slogan-shouting and some fringe elements trying to provoke members of other communities, I bet, would have happened before. Lathi wielding Ram bhakts (an oxymoron to me) would have entered religious processions before. So what was unique this year? ... for more, go to https://www.thequint.com/voices/opinion/opinion-communal-riots-violence-ram-navami-bengal-bihar-nitish-kumar-mamata

"The ruling party (BJP) does not want a democratic government but it is in the favour of a religious government,” Ambedkar said.

For this very reason, the government is not taking any action against those involved in religious violence. If such violence in the name of religion continues in the country, India will become the next Syria,” he said.

He also criticised Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat for his recent statement that the Sangh did not believe in excluding anyone from the process of nation building.

“It (RSS) is an organisation of liars which is dividing voters," he said. - the quint

Debating India's caste system: 7-26-11
As some of you know, I lived in India for two years of my boyhood. And although even then the caste system was officially banned, it was clear that it was used it many ways. This was particularly distressing for a young American boy who had grown up with the idea that all people are created not just equal in value but also children of God. I had trouble understanding what it could mean to be an "untouchable." It's now been nearly 65 years since India achieved independence from Great Britain, but the caste system remains a bone of contention. Just recently, in fact, the Hindu American Foundation issued this report damning the caste system's continued use and insisting that it violates the foundational beliefs of Hinduism. You can read the whole report at the Web site to which I've linked you, but here, in words taken from that Web site, are the six basic themes the report seeks to advocate: … for more, go to http://billtammeus.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/07/7-26-11.html
